One of the most frequent questions I get asked, from clients, business partners, networking friends, and bouncers at the bar is “How old are you?”. While I expect this question from the bar staff, I was somewhat shocked at the consistency that this question has been asked in my professional endeavors. To be clear, I’m not offended by this question in the slightest, and I always answer honestly – “23, but I’ll be 24 in January.”
Being in the senior services industry, this question serves as a credibility check, a “Why should I trust you to handle my personal and vulnerable transition?” kind of screening. And I don’t blame anyone for asking. What does an almost-24-year-old know about supporting seniors and their loved ones through a downsize?
I am fortunate to have my father and business partner, Dan, by my side. His wealth of knowledge and understanding of the industry is invaluable. I could write an essay about how much I’ve learned from him – both in life and in business. But I’ve found that my favorite way to learn how to properly support our clients in the downsize is not by pitching our services or preaching about our capabilities. It’s through genuine curiosity.
Curiosity transcends generations. Curiosity connects people who have very little in common. Curiosity is the catalyst of progress and change. Curiosity is the magic that sparks true, authentic conversation. There’s nothing I love more than asking people questions about the lives they live, the things their proud of, the lessons they’ve learned the hard way, and the mantras they abide to.
Of course, Sunny Way provides all of the services listed on our website, and we do it all with passion. But more than that, our team shares a genuine curiosity for the people we work with. If we can understand who each client is, we can serve and connect with them to a much more personal degree.
So yes, I am almost 24 years old. And while I can’t reference my own life experience to understand the challenges faced by our clients, I do believe I have the second best thing. And that’s genuine curiosity.
